Cybersecurity essentials for mid-market organizations

Mid-market organizations face the same threats as large enterprises with a fraction of the resources. A focused set of controls delivers most of the protection.

Do the fundamentals exceptionally well

Most incidents exploit unglamorous gaps: missing multi-factor authentication, unpatched internet-facing systems, excessive account privileges, and no tested backups. Closing those four gaps removes the majority of realistic attack paths.

Fundamentals done consistently outperform advanced tooling layered over weak basics. Audit your MFA coverage, patch cadence, admin accounts, and backup restores first; buy nothing new until those are solid.

Assume the incident will happen

Prevention has a ceiling. What separates a bad day from a catastrophic one is response: knowing who decides, who calls whom, and how systems get isolated and restored. A one-page incident plan that has been rehearsed beats a fifty-page document nobody has opened.

Test restoration, not just backup. An untested backup is a hope, not a control.

Make security a shared habit

Technical controls catch most threats, but people handle the rest. Short, regular training focused on the attacks your organization actually receives, plus an easy way to report anything suspicious, changes behavior more than annual compliance courses.

Security works best when it is part of normal operations, with clear ownership, rather than a project that ends.
